The Tapered Staff
Our flagship wooden staffs are more than training tools; they are legacy pieces handcrafted in the UK from FSC-certified sustainable timber. Eschewing the plastic-coated, chemically treated mass imports of the modern market, Woden Health returns to "Old School" materials—Ash and Oak—to provide the resonance, weight, and durability required for true mastery.
Select Your Tradition (The Taper)
While the straight staff offers uniform stability, our Tapered Series allows you to refine the physics of your movement. Select the taper that aligns with your lineage:
The Single Taper (Chinese 'Gun' Style): Commonly used in Northern and Southern Kung Fu, this design features a thick, weighted "Root" that gradually thins to a slender tip. This profile shifts the centre of gravity toward your lead hand, engineered for the explosive, "whiplike" vibrations and rapid-fire points characteristic of the Chinese internal arts.
The Double Taper (Okinawan 'Kyu-bo' Style): The gold standard for traditional Karate and Kobudo. This staff is thickest in the centre—providing a powerful, ergonomic grip—and tapers equally toward both ends. This balance facilitates high-speed rotations and dynamic transitions, allowing for devastating striking power without sacrificing agility.
The Material
FSC-Certified Ash: Used for the Single Taper. Ash is celebrated for its incredible flexibility and "give." It absorbs the impact shock and allows the staff to "snap" back into alignment, making it the perfect partner for fluid, high-velocity forms.
Heritage English Oak: Used for the Double Taper. Oak provides a dense, "rooted" weight. It is a stiff, uncompromising wood that offers maximum durability for heavy contact and structural strength training.
Select Your Fit (Inclusive Sizing)
In keeping with our commitment to Inclusion, we do not believe in "standard" lengths. A tool that is too long or too short for your frame compromises your technique and increases the risk of injury.
Use the guide below to find your perfect match. Your staff will be hand-finished to ensure the taper is proportional to the specific length you select.
The Woden Sustainability Promise
Each staff is finished with natural linseed oil, avoiding the synthetic lacquers and VOCs found in commercial gear. This allows the wood to "breathe" and develop a unique patina over years of sweat and practice. When you grip a Woden staff, you are connecting directly to the source.
